1. Sex Educator must either be a Doctor or a Person specially trained as Sex Educator and has scientifically accurate knowledge.
2. Sex Educator must be at ease with the subject, having good communication skill, and is comfortable with his/her own sexuality and has non-critical approach.
3. In school, sex education should start, before the onset of puberty, ideally from the age of 9 yrs.
4. Teaching material must be medically authenticated and scientifically accurate.
5. Educator must have correct answers for commonly asked questions
6. The language used should be easy and scientifically precise. Begin with the words they understand or use, and replace them later with scientific word.
7. The group of students should be homogenous in age and cultural background.
8. Teaching should be supported by visuals aids like Charts, slides, transparencies, Handouts, Diagrams, which are correctly labelled and readable.
9. Attempt should be made to know if every student has actually understood the important part of training.
10. Sketches and Line diagrams are enough as teaching material.
11. Nude photographs, pornography and ‘live’ models must be strictly avoided.
12. In co-education environment sex education should be given to boys & girls together and not separately.
13. For the Question-Answer sessions, questions should be put in writing, to encourage free and frank dialogue, while the anonymity of the questioner is maintained.
14. Answer all questions. Never avoid answering. You may be the first and the last person contacted for some issues
15. Remove fear of asking questions or find a way to receive their questions without causing them embarrassment because they may not ask such questions to their parents.
16. Ask for time if you are not sure about the answer, or if you do not know ‘how to answer’. Never say ‘This is not for your age’. If the children are old enough to ask questions, they are old enough to get the answers. Take help of a doctor if certain facts need to be answered by a doctor.
17. Strictly avoid sharing personal experience.
18. Do not narrate vulgar jokes. Use humour very consciously and never use examples to make fun of any sexual behaviour.
19. Sex education must be given only during school hours and that too in the presence of Teachers and Parents. So that parents are aware of what is being taught to their child.
20. Sex Abusers use disguise of a Sex Educator to reach their victims. School authorities must have a close eye on behaviour and activities of persons volunteering as Sex Educator.
21. After sex-education class, any demonstrations or individual coaching must be avoided.
22. While educating, strictly avoid religious and cultural criticism.
Most importantly,
- Educating Students on Sex is incomplete unless their Parents or Guardians are educated about their responsibilities to help child on sex related issues.
- Ignorance of Parents can also make their child easy victim of sexual abuse or assault.
- During annual medical check-ups in school, encourage child to ask personal sex related issues to the doctor.
